The hazard: Strangulation, entrapment or suffocation hazard

This product can trap a child or restrict their airway, which is why the advice is to stop using it today rather than to supervise it more closely.

What the notice says: When the recalled bed rails are attached to a bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the bed rail and the side of the mattress. This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation.

Why it matters: A cord, gap, strap or soft surface on this product can trap a child or restrict their breathing. These incidents are silent: there is no noise to bring an adult in from the next room.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If a child is found trapped or unresponsive, free them if you safely can, call 911, and start CPR if they are not breathing. Even after an apparently full recovery, a child who lost consciousness or had their airway blocked needs to be assessed the same day, because swelling and lung injury can develop afterwards.

What to do about Strangulation

Vive Health — This product can trap a child or restrict their airway, which is why the advice is to stop using it today rather than to supervise it more closely.

  1. Stop using the product immediately and move it out of the room where the child sleeps or plays.
  2. Claim the remedy on this page, photographing the model and date code first — the claim form will ask for both.
  3. For sleep products, put the baby down on a firm, flat surface with nothing else in it — a crib, bassinet or play yard meeting current federal standards.
  4. Do not resell, donate or hand it on. Passing on a recalled nursery item is illegal in the United States and is the main way these products stay in circulation.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • Several recalls now ask you to destroy the item and send a photo as proof. Register the claim before you do that, never after.
  • Return shipping is the company’s cost. If you are asked to pay it, push back.
  • A repair kit is shipped free and is designed to be fitted at home; if you cannot fit it, ask whether they will arrange installation.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should stop using the recalled Vive Health Bed Rails immediately and contact Vive Health for a full refund. Consumers should write "RECALLED" on the upper and lower portions of the bed rails with permanent marker and take a photo of the marked bed rail with the buyer's name on a piece of paper and email to [email protected]. Consumers should then dispose of the recalled product in accordance with the state and local waste disposal procedure.

Company contact: Vive Health toll-free at 800-487-3808 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email at [email protected], online at vivehealth.com/pages/recalls, or vivehealth.com and click "Recall" at the top of the page for more information.
