The hazard: Child-resistant packaging failure

This recall is about a cap or closure a child can open. That matters because the contents are hazardous if swallowed in quantity.

What the notice says: The baby oil contains low-viscosity hydrocarbons, which must be in child-resistant packaging, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The baby oil's packaging is not child-resistant, posing a risk of serious injury or illness from poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children. Additionally, petroleum distillates can get into the lungs, causing chemical pneumonia and/or pulmonary damage, which can be fatal.

Why it matters: The packaging does not meet the child-resistant standard the Poison Prevention Packaging Act requires for this type of product. A young child can open it, and the contents are harmful if swallowed.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If a child has swallowed any of the contents, call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 straight away — before searching online, and before trying to make them sick. Have the container with you so you can read the ingredients and strength. Call 911 instead if the child is drowsy, having a seizure, struggling to breathe or unconscious.

What to do about Packaging

Shield Line — This recall is about a cap or closure a child can open. That matters because the contents are hazardous if swallowed in quantity.

  1. Move the product somewhere a child genuinely cannot reach — a high, locked cupboard rather than a high shelf.
  2. Follow the remedy on this page; most of these recalls are refunded or re-packaged free.
  3. Check whether you have other packs from the same lot in a bathroom cabinet or a garage.
  4. Do not decant it into another container, especially not a drinks bottle or a food jar.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • A replacement is usually the current model, not the recalled one. Confirm the replacement is not itself under recall.
  • Several recalls now ask you to destroy the item and send a photo as proof. Register the claim before you do that, never after.
  • Return shipping is the company’s cost. If you are asked to pay it, push back.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should secure the baby oil out of sight and reach of children immediately and contact Shield Line for a refund. Consumers will be asked to submit a photo of the recalled product in the trash to receive a full refund.

Company contact: Shield Line at 201-624-2332 from 9 a.m. to 4:30p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email at [email protected], or online at https://www.shieldline.com/ and click "Recall" for more information.
