The hazard: Child-resistant packaging failure

Child-resistant packaging failed testing here, which is the specific defect the Poison Prevention Packaging Act exists to catch.

What the notice says: The recalled fuel containers violate the mandatory safety standards for portable fuel containers because they lack flame mitigation devices required under the Portable Fuel Container Safety Act, posing a deadly risk of flash fire. In addition, the Children's Gasoline Burn Prevention Act requires all closures on portable gasoline fuel containers to be child resistant. The spout on the products is not child-resistant, posing a risk of burn and poisoning to children.

Why it matters: The packaging does not meet the child-resistant standard the Poison Prevention Packaging Act requires for this type of product. A young child can open it, and the contents are harmful if swallowed.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If a child has swallowed any of the contents, call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 straight away — before searching online, and before trying to make them sick. Have the container with you so you can read the ingredients and strength. Call 911 instead if the child is drowsy, having a seizure, struggling to breathe or unconscious.

Products covered by this recall

This recall involves Scepter B62 gas and oil fuel containers. The recalled combination fuel containers are red with black caps and yellow spouts on each end. They have dual chambers with a 6-liter gas capacity on one side and 2.5-liter oil capacity on the other. "Scepter" and "Gasoline Danger" are embossed on the side of the container and a Fire Marshall stamp is on the front-left-side of the gas tank, near the fuel spout.

Check your product

The notice names 2 codes you can read straight off the package. Type the one printed on yours and the list below narrows to it.

Package size

Match the net weight or the piece count on the front of the pack.

  • 6 liter
  • 2.5 liter

Codes are lifted verbatim from the CPSC — Consumer Product Safety Commission notice. A code that is missing here may still be covered — the official notice is the complete list.

What to do about Packaging

Scepter — Child-resistant packaging failed testing here, which is the specific defect the Poison Prevention Packaging Act exists to catch.

  1. Move the product somewhere a child genuinely cannot reach — a high, locked cupboard rather than a high shelf.
  2. Save the Poison Control number, 1-800-222-1222, into your phone now rather than looking for it in an emergency.
  3. Follow the remedy on this page; most of these recalls are refunded or re-packaged free.
  4. Check whether you have other packs from the same lot in a bathroom cabinet or a garage.

If the claim stalls

Most recall claims are paid without argument. The ones that stall usually stall for a reason you can fix.

  • Check you used the recall channel rather than ordinary customer support — the two queues rarely talk to each other.
  • Send the photos they asked for in the format they asked for. A missing date code is the single commonest reason a claim sits unprocessed.
  • Give it ten working days, then chase in writing and quote your claim reference.
  • If the company is unresponsive or has stopped trading, report it to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov, and try the retailer in parallel.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled fuel containers, place them out of reach of children and contact Canada Prep and Ship for a full refund. Consumers will be asked to write "Recalled" with permanent marker on the container and submit a photo of it in the trash to [email protected].

Company contact: Canada Prep by email at [email protected], or online at https://canadaprepandship.com/recalls or www.canadaprepandship.com and click "Recall" at the top of the page for more information.
