The hazard: Carbon monoxide poisoning hazard

This product can produce carbon monoxide where it should not. A working CO alarm is the only reliable warning there is.

What the notice says: The recalled male-to-male extension cords violate safety requirements because their exposed prongs can become energized when one end is plugged into a generator or other power source, posing a risk of serious injury and death from electrocution. In addition, using the cords to supply power from a generator to a residential electrical system (backfeeding) poses a risk of electrocution and fire. The cords' short length encourages the use of generators close to homes or enclosed spaces, posing a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Why it matters: The product can release carbon monoxide, a gas with no colour, smell or taste. People who are asleep or intoxicated can die from it before anyone notices anything is wrong.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

The CDC describes carbon monoxide poisoning as headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion — easily mistaken for flu, but without a fever. If you suspect it, get everyone outside into fresh air first, then call 911. Tell the crew that CO is suspected. A key clue is several people, or the pets, feeling ill at the same time, and feeling better once they leave the building.

This recall involves male-to-male extension cords, also known as pigtail cables, model numbers RY-US-06 and RY_US-1.5. The recalled, 125V 12AWG, heavy-duty extension cords are generally used to back-feed electricity to a residence during a power outage by connecting a generator to an outlet in the home. The blue or yellow cords have two male ends with a three-prong black plug and measure between 23.6 inches and 59 inches long. The model number is printed on the product's purchase order or receipt.

What to do about Carbon monoxide

This product can produce carbon monoxide where it should not. A working CO alarm is the only reliable warning there is.

  1. Stop using the product indoors, in a garage, in a tent or in any partly enclosed space — an open door or window is not ventilation.
  2. Fit a working carbon monoxide alarm on every sleeping level and test it; it is a few dollars and it is the only warning you will get.
  3. Do not use a generator, grill or fuel-burning heater inside the home under any circumstances.
  4. Follow the remedy on this page and keep the unit out of use until it is done.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • A repair kit is shipped free and is designed to be fitted at home; if you cannot fit it, ask whether they will arrange installation.
  • A replacement is usually the current model, not the recalled one. Confirm the replacement is not itself under recall.
  • Several recalls now ask you to destroy the item and send a photo as proof. Register the claim before you do that, never after.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should stop using the recalled extension cords immediately, taking care not to touch the live end of the cord when unplugging, and contact Shenzhen Shijingjie Network Technology for a full refund.
