The hazard: Button battery hazard

This product was recalled because its battery compartment does not stay shut. A coin cell lodged in a child’s throat causes a chemical burn, not a choking incident, and the two need very different responses.

What the notice says: The cups and containers violate the mandatory standard for consumer products with button cell and coin batteries because they contain button cell batteries that can be accessed easily by children, posing an ingestion hazard. In addition, the products do not bear the warning labels required by Reese's Law. If button cell or coin batteries are swallowed, the ingested batteries can cause serious injuries, including internal chemical burns, and death.

Why it matters: The battery compartment can be opened by a child, or the cell can work loose. A swallowed coin-cell battery generates an alkaline burn where it lodges and can damage the oesophagus within a couple of hours — while the child still looks well.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

A swallowed button battery is an emergency. Go straight to an emergency department; do not induce vomiting and do not give food or drink unless staff tell you to. The National Battery Ingestion Hotline on 800-498-8666 takes calls around the clock. Early signs can be as vague as drooling, refusing food, coughing, gagging or chest pain, and a child who swallowed one unobserved may show nothing at all at first.

What to do about Button battery

Golden Link — This product was recalled because its battery compartment does not stay shut. A coin cell lodged in a child’s throat causes a chemical burn, not a choking incident, and the two need very different responses.

  1. Take the product away from children now, before reading the rest of this page.
  2. Do not tape the compartment shut and carry on — the remedy on this page exists because that does not hold.
  3. Store loose coin cells, new and used, out of reach and out of sight, and dispose of spent ones the same day.
  4. Follow the company’s remedy for the product itself and keep the packaging until the claim is settled.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • A repair kit is shipped free and is designed to be fitted at home; if you cannot fit it, ask whether they will arrange installation.
  • A replacement is usually the current model, not the recalled one. Confirm the replacement is not itself under recall.
  • Several recalls now ask you to destroy the item and send a photo as proof. Register the claim before you do that, never after.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should stop using the Fantastic Four Cups and Captain America Popcorn Helmet Containers immediately and contact Golden Link for a refund of the purchase price of the product. Consumers will be asked to dispose of the product and send a photo showing proof of disposal to [email protected] to receive a refund. Note: Button cell batteries are hazardous. Batteries should be disposed of or recycled by following local hazardous waste procedures.
