The hazard: Strangulation, entrapment or suffocation hazard

This product can trap a child or restrict their airway, which is why the advice is to stop using it today rather than to supervise it more closely.

What the notice says: The recalled drain covers violate the entrapment protection standards of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA), posing deadly entrapment and drowning hazards to swimmers and bathers.

Why it matters: A cord, gap, strap or soft surface on this product can trap a child or restrict their breathing. These incidents are silent: there is no noise to bring an adult in from the next room.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If a child is found trapped or unresponsive, free them if you safely can, call 911, and start CPR if they are not breathing. Even after an apparently full recovery, a child who lost consciousness or had their airway blocked needs to be assessed the same day, because swelling and lung injury can develop afterwards.

What to do about Strangulation

This product can trap a child or restrict their airway, which is why the advice is to stop using it today rather than to supervise it more closely.

  1. Stop using the product immediately and move it out of the room where the child sleeps or plays.
  2. For sleep products, put the baby down on a firm, flat surface with nothing else in it — a crib, bassinet or play yard meeting current federal standards.
  3. Do not resell, donate or hand it on. Passing on a recalled nursery item is illegal in the United States and is the main way these products stay in circulation.
  4. Tell every other carer: grandparents, childminders, nurseries. Recalled sleep products most often resurface at a second home.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • Return shipping is the company’s cost. If you are asked to pay it, push back.
  • A repair kit is shipped free and is designed to be fitted at home; if you cannot fit it, ask whether they will arrange installation.
  • A replacement is usually the current model, not the recalled one. Confirm the replacement is not itself under recall.

Remedy named in the notice: Pool owners, pool operators and consumers should stop using pools with the recalled pool drain covers immediately and contact Eicong for a full refund. Consumers will be asked to destroy the cover by writing in permanent maker "Recalled" on it and to send a photo of the destroyed cover to [email protected].

Company contact: Eicong by email at [email protected].
