The hazard: Child-resistant packaging failure

This recall is about a cap or closure a child can open. That matters because the contents are hazardous if swallowed in quantity.

What the notice says: The 6 mL nasal sprays contain an imidazoline, which must be in child-resistant packaging or meet the labeling requirements for non-complying packaging, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The 6 mL nasal spray's packaging is not child-resistant nor bears the required labeling statement, posing a risk of serious injury or illness from poisoning, if the contents are swallowed by young children.

Why it matters: The packaging does not meet the child-resistant standard the Poison Prevention Packaging Act requires for this type of product. A young child can open it, and the contents are harmful if swallowed.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If a child has swallowed any of the contents, call Poison Control on 1-800-222-1222 straight away — before searching online, and before trying to make them sick. Have the container with you so you can read the ingredients and strength. Call 911 instead if the child is drowsy, having a seizure, struggling to breathe or unconscious.

What to do about Packaging

Bayer — This recall is about a cap or closure a child can open. That matters because the contents are hazardous if swallowed in quantity.

  1. Move the product somewhere a child genuinely cannot reach — a high, locked cupboard rather than a high shelf.
  2. Follow the remedy on this page; most of these recalls are refunded or re-packaged free.
  3. Check whether you have other packs from the same lot in a bathroom cabinet or a garage.
  4. Do not decant it into another container, especially not a drinks bottle or a food jar.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • A replacement is usually the current model, not the recalled one. Confirm the replacement is not itself under recall.
  • Several recalls now ask you to destroy the item and send a photo as proof. Register the claim before you do that, never after.
  • Return shipping is the company’s cost. If you are asked to pay it, push back.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should immediately secure the recalled bottles out of sight and reach of children and go to the webform posted on www.livewell.bayer.com/afrin-original-spray-recall to begin a request for a refund. Consumers will be asked to take and submit a photo of the product before disposing of it in order to receive a refund.

Company contact: Bayer toll free at 800 317-2165, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. through 8 p.m. ET, or online through a recall refund webform available at www.livewell.bayer.com/afrin-original-spray-recall.
