The hazard: Strangulation, entrapment or suffocation hazard

This product can trap a child or restrict their airway, which is why the advice is to stop using it today rather than to supervise it more closely.

What the notice says: The recalled shades have long operating cords and accessible inner cords that can cause death or serious injury to children, due to strangulation and entanglement hazards. The shades violate the federal rule for window coverings and present a substantial product hazard. In addition, the shades also violate labeling requirements for window coverings.

Why it matters: A cord, gap, strap or soft surface on this product can trap a child or restrict their breathing. These incidents are silent: there is no noise to bring an adult in from the next room.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If a child is found trapped or unresponsive, free them if you safely can, call 911, and start CPR if they are not breathing. Even after an apparently full recovery, a child who lost consciousness or had their airway blocked needs to be assessed the same day, because swelling and lung injury can develop afterwards.

Products covered by this recall

This recall involves Autoez-branded bamboo shades. The recalled bamboo shades were sold in brown, with sizes ranging from 24 to 72 inches wide and 64 to 72 inches high. "Autoez" is printed on the sticker label on the top rail of the shade.

What to do about Strangulation

This product can trap a child or restrict their airway, which is why the advice is to stop using it today rather than to supervise it more closely.

  1. Stop using the product immediately and move it out of the room where the child sleeps or plays.
  2. Tell every other carer: grandparents, childminders, nurseries. Recalled sleep products most often resurface at a second home.
  3. Claim the remedy on this page, photographing the model and date code first — the claim form will ask for both.
  4. For sleep products, put the baby down on a firm, flat surface with nothing else in it — a crib, bassinet or play yard meeting current federal standards.

How the remedy works

CPSC recalls specify one of three remedies, and which one you get is not negotiable — but how smoothly it goes often is.

  • A refund means the purchase price back, sometimes prorated by age for durable goods. Ask how they calculated it if the figure looks low.
  • A replacement is usually the current model, not the recalled one. Confirm the replacement is not itself under recall.
  • Several recalls now ask you to destroy the item and send a photo as proof. Register the claim before you do that, never after.
  • Return shipping is the company’s cost. If you are asked to pay it, push back.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled shades and contact Autoez for a full refund. Consumers should remove the shades, cut the operating cord, write the word "Recalled" on the shades and dispose of the product in the garbage. Consumers should send a photograph of the destroyed window shades in the garbage to [email protected].
