The hazard: Product safety hazard

A consumer product hazard prompted this recall, and the remedy — refund, repair or replacement — is funded by the company, not by you.

What the notice says: The helmets in the recalled sets violate the mandatory safety standard for bicycle helmets because the helmets do not comply with the impact attenuation, retention system, positional stability, labeling and certification requirements. The helmets can fail to protect the user in the event of a crash, posing a serious risk of injury or death due to head injury.

Why it matters: The CPSC published this recall because the product can injure someone. The hazard statement above describes how.

What to do about Product safety

5Color — A consumer product hazard prompted this recall, and the remedy — refund, repair or replacement — is funded by the company, not by you.

  1. Stop using the product and move it somewhere a child or pet cannot reach it.
  2. Follow the remedy the notice specifies, and register the claim before you destroy anything.
  3. If the product already hurt someone, file a report at SaferProducts.gov.
  4. Check the model number and date code against the identifiers on this page, and photograph them.

If the claim stalls

Most recall claims are paid without argument. The ones that stall usually stall for a reason you can fix.

  • Check you used the recall channel rather than ordinary customer support — the two queues rarely talk to each other.
  • Give it ten working days, then chase in writing and quote your claim reference.
  • If the company is unresponsive or has stopped trading, report it to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov, and try the retailer in parallel.
  • Paid by card? A chargeback for goods that are unfit for sale is a legitimate fallback once the company has had a fair chance.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should stop using the helmets immediately and contact 5Color for a full refund of the set. Consumers will be asked to destroy the recalled helmet by cutting the straps and email a photo of the destroyed helmet to [email protected]. Consumers should then dispose of the recalled helmet. Consumers may keep the protection pads.

Company contact: 5Color toll free at 833-382-6461 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or email at [email protected].
