The hazard: High-powered magnet hazard

Loose high-powered magnets are the hazard here. The danger comes from swallowing more than one, because they then find each other through the gut wall.

What the notice says: The lithium-ion battery in the recalled power banks can overheat and ignite, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Why it matters: Loose high-powered magnets are dangerous when more than one is swallowed. They attract each other through the walls of the intestine and pinch the tissue trapped between them, an injury that usually needs surgery.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If you think a child has swallowed magnets — even if they seem entirely well — go to an emergency department and say magnets are involved. Early symptoms are indistinguishable from a stomach bug: stomach pain, vomiting, poor appetite. A single magnet may pass on its own; two or more rarely do, and the team needs to know how many are unaccounted for.

Products covered by this recall

This recall involves XO Poppy Power Trip Magnetic Wireless Power Banks with model number PYPBK5M. The power banks come in three colors and can be identified by their appearance and packaging: cream colored (PY-PBK5M-CR2); cream with pink bow print (PY-PBK5M-BW8); and black with teddy bear print (PY-PBK5M-TB2). Specific model numbers can be found printed on the bottom of the original packaging, directly above the barcode. Note: Do not throw this recalled lithium-ion battery or device in the trash, in the general recycling stream (e.g., street-level or curbside recycling bins), or in used battery recycling boxes found at various retail and home improvement stores. Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently than other batteries, because they present a greater risk of fire. Your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center may accept this recalled lithium-ion battery or device for disposal. Before taking your battery or device to a HHW collection center, contact that office ahead of time and ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries. If it does not, contact your municipality for further guidance.

What to do about Magnets

Truststone Group — Loose high-powered magnets are the hazard here. The danger comes from swallowing more than one, because they then find each other through the gut wall.

  1. Put the product out of reach and count the magnets against the number the instructions say it should have.
  2. Check under furniture and along skirting boards — stray magnets travel further than you would expect.
  3. If any are unaccounted for and a child could have reached them, go to an emergency department and tell them magnets may have been swallowed.
  4. Make sure older children know that using magnets as fake piercings is a recognised route to a serious injury.

Claiming your refund, repair or replacement

The recalling company decides the remedy and funds it. You should never pay for a recall repair or for return shipping.

  • Use the company contact on this page first. Most firms run a dedicated recall page with a claim form that is far quicker than their main support line.
  • If you bought it from a retailer rather than the brand, try both. Target, Walmart and Amazon often refund recalled goods from the order history.
  • If the company stops responding, escalate to the CPSC. Firms under a recall order have reporting duties to the agency.
  • Have the model number, the date code and your photos ready. Many companies issue store credit by default — ask for cash or a card reversal if you would rather have it.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should stop using the recalled power banks immediately and contact Truststone Group for a full refund in the form of a virtual gift card. The virtual gift card can be used at any establishment that accepts Mastercard.

Company contact: Truststone Group toll-free at 833-820-0888 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, email at [email protected], online at https://www.recallrtr.com/xopowerbank and click on “Important Recall Information” to learn more.
