The hazard: High-powered magnet hazard

The problem with this product is magnets coming loose. A magnet ingestion looks like an ordinary stomach upset for the first day or two, which is exactly why these recalls are issued.

What the notice says: The lithium-ion battery and electrical components in the recalled hand warmers can overheat and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury from fire and burn hazards.

Why it matters: Loose high-powered magnets are dangerous when more than one is swallowed. They attract each other through the walls of the intestine and pinch the tissue trapped between them, an injury that usually needs surgery.

Symptoms and when to call a doctor

If you think a child has swallowed magnets — even if they seem entirely well — go to an emergency department and say magnets are involved. Early symptoms are indistinguishable from a stomach bug: stomach pain, vomiting, poor appetite. A single magnet may pass on its own; two or more rarely do, and the team needs to know how many are unaccounted for.

Products covered by this recall

This recall involves Gobi Heat-branded rechargeable hand warmers. The black with gray hand warmers were sold in packs of two warmers that can be magnetically joined together and include a charging cable. The hand warmers have a USB-C port to charge the built-in lithium-ion batteries in each unit. The adjustable-heat hand warmers have LED indicator lights on the hard plastic shell and come with a silicone lanyard. "Gobi Heat" is printed on the top of the hand warmers and on the product packaging, and model number "UT3053" on the underside.

What to do about Magnets

Gobi Heat — The problem with this product is magnets coming loose. A magnet ingestion looks like an ordinary stomach upset for the first day or two, which is exactly why these recalls are issued.

  1. Put the product out of reach and count the magnets against the number the instructions say it should have.
  2. If any are unaccounted for and a child could have reached them, go to an emergency department and tell them magnets may have been swallowed.
  3. Make sure older children know that using magnets as fake piercings is a recognised route to a serious injury.
  4. Follow the remedy described on this page rather than keeping the item with the magnets glued back in.

If the claim stalls

Most recall claims are paid without argument. The ones that stall usually stall for a reason you can fix.

  • Check you used the recall channel rather than ordinary customer support — the two queues rarely talk to each other.
  • Paid by card? A chargeback for goods that are unfit for sale is a legitimate fallback once the company has had a fair chance.
  • Send the photos they asked for in the format they asked for. A missing date code is the single commonest reason a claim sits unprocessed.
  • Give it ten working days, then chase in writing and quote your claim reference.

Remedy named in the notice: Consumers should stop using the recalled hand warmers immediately and contact Gobi Heat for a full refund or store credit, equal to full refund of the purchase price plus 20% of that amount. Consumers will be asked to go to https://gobiheat.com/pages/handwarmer-recall to obtain a claim number and instructions to destroy the hand warmers by writing in permanent marker "Recalled" on the product and send a photo, showing the marked hand warmer and the product's model, to [email protected]. Consumers should then dispose of the recalled product with the lithium-ion battery, in accordance with applicable local and state hazardous waste regulations. Note: Do not throw this recalled lithium-ion battery or device in the trash, the general recycling stream (e.g., street-level or curbside recycling bins), or used battery recycling boxes found at various retail and home improvement stores. Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently than other batteries, because they present a greater risk of fire. Your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center may accept this recalled lithium-ion battery or device for disposal. Before taking your battery or device to a…
