NHTSA safety recall National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

Chrysler Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE and Jeep Wrangler 4XE Plug-In Hybrid recall: Debris inside the engine may cause engine failure

Recall published 12 months ago

Debris inside the engine may cause engine failure, which can result in a loss of drive power and/or an engine compartment fire.

The hazard: Loss of drive power or rollaway

A stall or rollaway risk prompted this recall, and both failure modes are intermittent, which is why a vehicle that has behaved perfectly is still included.

What the notice says: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash, and a vehicle fire can increase the risk of injury.

Why it matters: The vehicle may stall, lose motive power while being driven, or roll away after being left in park. A stall at speed removes power steering and power braking assistance at the same moment.

What to do about Power loss

Chrysler — A stall or rollaway risk prompted this recall, and both failure modes are intermittent, which is why a vehicle that has behaved perfectly is still included.

  1. If the vehicle has already stalled or rolled, stop using it and tell the dealer that when you book — it moves you up the queue.
  2. Keep the repair order the dealer hands you. It is your proof the campaign was closed out, and it matters at resale.
  3. Check your own VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you do anything else. A campaign covers a build range, not every car of that model year, and the VIN lookup is the only thing that confirms yours is included.
  4. Call any franchised dealer for the brand, give them the campaign number from this page, and ask them to confirm parts are in stock before you book — part supply, not labour, is what delays a fresh recall.

Getting the repair booked and paid for

The money side of a vehicle recall is simple. The scheduling side is where people lose weeks.

  • Ask whether the parts are physically in stock before you accept a date. A booking without parts is a wasted morning.
  • If you get nowhere, file at nhtsa.gov. Complaints tied to an open campaign number carry weight.
  • If the dealer says the remedy is not yet available, ask to be put on their notification list and get that in writing by email.
  • Where the manufacturer has issued an interim measure — park outside, do not drive, a software limiter — follow it until the full remedy is done.

Remedy named in the notice: Dealers will install a software update and replace the block or engine as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning May 7, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 78C. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning November 13, 2025.
